Festival of the Virgen de la Soledad

The Fiesta of the Virgen de la Soledad is an important event on the calendar of Puerto Escondido, for it celebrates the patron saint not only of the state of Oaxaca, but of the fishermen of Puerto Escondido.

A highlight of the festival is the procession of decorated fishboats, one bearing the statue of the virgin, others carrying brass bands, and close to another 100 bearing the crowds that have gathered on the beach for the occasion.

The celebrations begin on December 16 with a calenda, followed by a cultural program and fireworks, along with a castillo, on the 17th. The festival finishes on December 18 with the procession at sea, which takes the large flotilla of boats out near La Punta and back, and mass on the beach.
